This situation is related to the coming of the comet. Governments from around the world have agreed to combine all resources they have to build several massive and advanced spaceships that will bring the best of human kind to Mars in order to save mankind from extinction. The plan started not long after the comet was first spotted as a contingency plan if they can not find a way to stop the comet.
